Polishing potential
At Edge, we take pride in supporting individuals not just in finding work but also in discovering purpose, confidence and community through meaningful employment. Matthew’s journey exemplifies our integrated support from DES and NDIS, demonstrating how the right opportunity can truly change a person’s life.
When Matthew first came to Edge, he was facing the challenge of adjusting to life after a diagnosis. The path ahead was unclear, and the idea of working again felt distant. But with the support of the Edge team, his family and his determination, Matthew took the first steps toward reclaiming his independence.
“It had been quite a long time since I found a job I could work in, especially after my diagnosis. I didn’t think I would be able to work in any role with any reliability,” shared Matthew.
With the guidance of Chantel, Edge NDIS Employment Support Coach, they began mapping out a plan, which started with building confidence, identifying strengths and exploring job opportunities.
“Chantel was a huge influence on my life,” Matthew shared. “She helped with a lot of problems I was having early on. She wore a lot of hats while I was organising other support.”
Together, Chantel and Matthew explored roles that matched his interests and skills in design and hands-on work. Through job canvassing, they discovered a promising opportunity at Carmen Jewellers, where he secured a position as a Jewellery Sales Assistant.
When asked what he loves about his job, he shared, “I enjoy working with and around jewellery, particularly repairs or design, and I find it to be a good place for problem solving with a variety of ways to approach them. Everyone has been very kind and supportive with both HR and my manager checking in and seeing if and when I need help.”
The benefits of employment have extended beyond the workplace for Matthew. He has gained confidence, a sense of independence, and the value of having structure and purpose in his days.
“I find it much easier to live my life with large blocks of time dedicated to something out of my house and routine. It helps me organise the rest of my life much better.”
We’re proud to have assisted Matthew on his journey and excited to continue to support him as he continues to flourish in his role.
