“Captain of my own ship”
With his Certificate II in Animal Studies, Begonia Pets and Produce was always going to be a good fit for Ryan’s interests. This small family‑owned business in the close-knit Mundaring and Hills community has been extremely supportive, accommodating Ryan’s needs while getting him involved in tasks within his ability and extending
him where possible. And Ryan has flourished in the friendly and respectful atmosphere.
“I love getting to see and pat the animals and help look after them, and I can already see that work will give me independence, a chance to be a part of my community and a sense of self-worth.”
Through his NDIS plan, Ryan receives weekly School Leaver Employment Supports from Edge NDIS Employment Support Coach Lee-Caroline. “Lee helps me when I can’t do something, but she doesn’t do the work for me, she watches me to make sure I don’t get hurt and that I understand why I’m doing a job.”
“It’s helped me define what independence really is – that I am the captain of my own ship and that I get to make decisions about what direction I want to take in my life.”
“Edge and Lee have helped me with reducing my reliance on my mum for everyday tasks, improving my relationship with my mum so that she can be her own person. They’ve helped me develop my confidence, my stamina and my mental health. I look forward to getting out and having a go at different things. My morale has improved, I can see a brighter future ahead.”
