Persistence pays off
After completing multiple work trials and engaging with employers, Melissa’s persistence paid off and she is now working as a Kitchenhand at The Sovereign Arms Joondalup.
She is loving her new role as she is building her knowledge, skills and working towards her financial goal of travelling around Australia.
“Having a job has reduced my anxiety and keeps me busy,” said Melissa.
“Edge helped me find work and a good employer who understands people with disability. I got a lot of reassurance from them and Edge helps me know my roster and sort changes to my shifts. I feel happy and supported, and I know I can call Edge with any problems I have.”
When we asked Edge Team Leader Lauren about Melissa’s journey, she shared, “Melissa has been very persistent and proactive in trying to secure employment. It was a team effort to secure Melissa’s position at the Sovereign Arms Joondalup. We had to coach and manage Melissa’s expectations, reassuring her about the employment process and making sure we were working with an understanding employer, which makes the biggest difference. Knowing what Melissa needs to feel supported and successful makes it work. Ensuring there is open communication with Melissa, her employer, the support network and Edge makes sure we are all on the same page.”
We wish Melissa all the best in her role and in the hospitality course she is completing at TAFE.
