Finding his wings
Josh needed assistance finding a job for his school workplace learning subject. He came to Edge where his Project Employment Consultant helped him to secure a volunteer role at a business specialising in bird management and care, called Birds ‘n’ All.
“I love all the support I’ve been given. My colleagues have been so welcoming and kind to me as a newcomer. When I’m at my job, I feel like I’m in my element, and I feel so thankful and grateful for this opportunity.”
Since finding this role Josh has grown in independence. “The Edge staff have made me feel more confident and supported. They have helped me learn most of the Workplace Health and Safety policies and have overall helped me grow as a young adult.”
Right from the beginning Josh impressed his employer with his attention to detail, particularly in animal care. They are now assisting him to upskill in customer service, aiming to transition Josh into paid employment in the future.
Josh’s advice to other people living with disability is “Don’t be afraid to express yourself and don’t be ashamed of what you are. Be grateful for those around you and live life to the fullest.”
When we asked Josh what he would say to employers thinking about hiring someone with a disability, he said “Don’t think of people only based off their disability. They are much more!” Given Josh has a First Aid certificate, Safe Food Handling certificate, Certificate 1 in Japanese and has recently gained his learner’s driving licence, he’s living proof of that advice.
