Building Josh’s future

Volunteering can provide not only a sense of purpose but also an avenue for learning and growth. One of our NDIS clients, Josh, has experienced this firsthand, benefiting from over a year of volunteering at the WA Museum Boola Bardip.

With the support of his NDIS Employment Support Coach, Josh has developed the confidence to pursue new skills and challenge himself.

“I enjoy learning new skills and various things during my Edge sessions,” Josh shared.

As a volunteer at the museum, Josh is responsible for a variety of tasks, including resetting electronic devices, assisting visitors with directions, and explaining how to use the museum’s audio guide devices. His role not only allows him to interact with visitors but also provides valuable learning experiences every day. “I enjoy helping out visitors and also learning new information,” Josh explains.

Josh has grown not just in his role at the museum but also in his personal confidence and communication skills. “Edge has helped me during my shifts at the museum by assisting me with tasks and communication,” he shared.

Through his NDIS School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) funding, Josh has also gained valuable experience in transport training, capacity building, skill development and improved self-assurance.

The Edge team also assisted Josh in applying for a Certificate III in Tourism at TAFE, which has opened up further opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industry. “Edge helped me be able to get the volunteer role at the museum and apply for a Certificate III in Tourism at TAFE,” Josh explains.
